by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin p.-1 “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” --George Orwell (1903-1950) “He that would live in peace and at ease must not speak all he knows or all he sees.” --Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) “All war is deception.” --Sun Tzu (5th century B.C.) “The future is up for grabs. It belongs to any and all who will take the risk.” --Robert Anton Wilson (1932- ) “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones.” --William Shakespeare (1564-1616) p.4-5 “I wanted some time by myself to write. I’ve got half a dozen novels started, but nothing seems to be grabbing me and shaking itself out of my brain.” It was a bad metaphor, and one Jake never would have used with anyone who didn’t know better; a problem writers faced since the days of ink and papyrus was that no-writers thought the creative process came to them like a visiting muse, depositing a manuscript on their desk as simply as a replicated cup of raktajino. p.39 Sometimes you either end up in charge, Valdore thought, or else you end up executed. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground. p.93 “I suppose you also noticed that Gardner never exactly ordered me not to go after the slavers. All he said was that he couldn’t order me to do it.” She raised an eyebrow and a look rather like a smirk twisted her lips. “I will remember to mention that when I appear as a character witness at your court-martial.” Archer couldn’t have been more stunned had she drawn a phase pistol at him and fired. “That’s remarkable, T’Pol. Did you… did you just make a joke?” “For your sake, sir, I certainly hope so.” Was that another one? he thought as he opened his door again. He let his enigmatic smile glide right into a mischievous grin as he walked back into the doorway. “Sometimes,” he said over his shoulder T’Pol followed him, “it’s a lot easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission.” p.159 “Absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence.” --Reed p.169-170 He drew closer to Trip. “I’ll tell you something that will really make you appreciate the mind of God--or at least the mysteries of the multiverse. The bureau has proof of the existence of an alternate universe that is virtually identical to our own--almost. But in that universe, significant changes have occurred throughout history. Some of the people there are us, only us raised in an alternate environment that forced them to make different choices in their lives.” He paused for a moment. “We doubt that this ‘mirror universe’ is the only one of its kind.” He turned away, looking toward the window. “So with all of the knowledge you have gained aboard Enterprise, can you really fault the idea that the God we were both taught about might exist--right alongside other planes of existence in which all Gods might be real? Or that in certain realities, none of them exist?” p.191 “How unfortunate,” the administrator said, “that anyone should fall unwillingly into the hands of Orion slavers. How many Andorians were taken?” Archer thought he could hear a note of sympathy in the synthetic voice, though he wasn’t certain whether to attribute it to the administrator’s good will or to the emotional subtext recognition subroutines Hoshi had written into her translation matrix software. “Thirty-seven individuals in all,” Archer said. “And strictly speaking, they’re not Andorians as such.” “Not Andorians? But from Andoria?” The administrator’s synthesized voice registered confusion, even though the creature’s body language, which largely consisted of many frequent, small jerky movements, remained obscure. p.199 “Forget certainty,” Archer said, approaching her console and watching over her shoulder as she worked. “At this point, I’m willing to settle for wild speculation.” p.201 “Ulho hiera, mos ih ihir nviomn riud ih seiyya!” The voice was stern and angry. The translator implanted within Trip’s ear immediately translated the warning. “Unidentified vessel, prepare to be boarded or destroyed!” p.263-264 sei = three, kre = two, hwi = one, lliu = zero p.283 Trip thought Ch’uhv was finally about to pick up the disruptor pistol that lay on the table before hi and end Erehin’s lengthy presentation with the finality of the grave. p.315 “They’ve opened fire,” Ehrehin said dryly, one eyebrow arched upward as if to announce that he found making declarations of the obvious to be darkly amusing. p.385 Earth’s political unity was only around fifteen years old, dating from the time that Earth’s last holdout, the Independent Republic of Australia, grudgingly and belatedly followed the rest of the planet’s nation-states in joining Earth’s global federated government. p.389 “How do you do that, sir?” Travis asked as he prepped Shuttlepod One for launch from the landing pad on the council building roof. “I was just thinking the very same thing,” said Malcolm, who had just finished strapping into one of the seats positioned slightly aft of the cockpit, near those occupied by Hoshi and Phlox. “I have to assume that the Academy offers special command-track speech courses.” Archer grinned over his shoulder at Malcolm from the copilot’s seat beside Travis. “What exactly are you talking about, Malcolm?” “I’m referring to that rousing little gem of extemporaneous persuasive oratory you just delivered to the delegates, sir,” Malcolm said, returning Archer’s grin. “You don’t need to push so hard to get that promotion, Malcolm, Archer said in a bantering tone. p.404 Trip’s brother Albert has a husband, Miguel p.407 A sudden upwelling of tears rose, poised on the edge of Charles’s lower lids, like a dam about to break. Archer’s face looked distorted, viewed through a prism of grief. p.428 And a lot of these people consider me a hero, dammit! he thought, cursing himself for his continued nervousness. He looked up from the lectern that concealed his padd, imagining all the faces that he couldn’t see clearly in the enormous, faceless crowd, while focusing his gaze on the nearest rows. These were filled with luminaries of numerous species, and many of them would affix their signatures to the historic Coalition Compact later today. He felt buffeted by the intense pressure of their eyes and their expectations: Admirals Black and Gardner from Starfleet Command; Captain Erika Hernandez, Archer’s one-time lover and current counterpart aboard the Starship Columbia NX-02; Prime Minister Nathan Samuels and Interior Minister Haroun al-Rashid of Earth; Ambassadors Soval, Solkar, and L’Nel, and Minister T’Pau of Vulcan; Ambassadors Thoris and sh’Rothress of Andoria, as well as Shran and his new bondmates, Shenar, Vishri, and Jhamel; Ambassador Gral of Tellar; and various members of the press, most of whom were equipped with head-mounted imaging equipment. All of it trained squarely upon him, like some mass-media firing squad. p.435 Valdore had long made it a practice never to rely on hope as a tactical weapon.
